When the Economy Needs Jobs, It's No Time to Say "No."

At a time when unemployment has surged to its highest rate in decades, Elton Gallegly's "no" vote on extending jobless benefits threatens the livelihood of the nation's jobless and puts the country's fragile economy at risk, said Tim Allison, Democratic candidate for the 24th Congressional District.

But Gallegly did exactly that:

  • He voted "no" on HR 5618, the Restoration of Emergency Unemployment Compensation Act. The bill passed anyway, by a margin of 270-153.
  • Earlier, he voted "no" to HR 5114, a bill that would provide homeowners a break from requiring flood insurance for their properties, even though that break would be needed to improve flood zone mapping and would help people stay in their homes.

"Right now, the biggest responsibility for the government is to help create jobs," said Allison. "Unemployment is a safety net people pay into while they're working, and it's irresponsible, during this extraordinary period, to yank this safety net away."

"I'm dismayed by Elton Gallegly's decisions to obstruct actions we need to jump start the economy and provide jobs. These votes make it clear to me that Elton Gallegly is a career politician who is out of touch with the needs of his constituents, and of the nation as a whole."
